The importance of lifelong learning

by Gerald G. Mannikarote, MBBS MBA

People often ask why is it important to pursue an education even after you have an established career.  My thought is that you must eternally pursue an education.  This does not necessarily mean going to college or going back to college.

Lifelong learning means to learn from others as well as yourself.  It is often said that every mistake should be used as a learning experience.  But we can also learn from the mistakes and experiences of others.  Books and courses from other will give us insights from perspectives that we couldn’t have on our own.

Never stop learning

By reading about the works of others, we can learn from their mistakes and successes.  We can live multiple lifetimes and gain more experiences through the works of others.  Books are an easy way to expand your knowledge and through others, your experiences.

According to the Business Insider, Warren Buffett pointed to books as a key to his success.  He said, “That’s how knowledge works.  It builds up, like compound interest.  All of you can do it, but I guarantee not not many of you will do it.” What are some of your favorite books that you’ve benefitted from?  Please let us know in the comments.

Another way to keep learning is through mentors and advisors. Mentors and advisors can guide you in your professional, as well as personal, journey.  They too can share their experiences with you.  Have you ever had any mentors or advisors?  What would you like to be mentored on?  Let us know through this survey.

Courses and Training

Instructional courses are another way to keep learning.  Taking courses will help you develop skills that you already have or teach you new skills all together. Such courses are typically taught by experts in specific fields.  You can draw up their knowledge and experiences to improve the skills you are learning about.

How are you going to continue to learn?  What will you do this year to improve your current skill set?  What courses will you take to improve your skills?  What courses are you interested in taking?
